Is a GSM gate opener right for you?

It mostly comes down to one thing: how far your gate is from your router. Here's the honest version, including when you shouldn't buy this.

A GSM module is the right call when

  • Your gate is out of Wi-Fi range — end of a long driveway, a field entrance, a shared parking barrier. Cell signal reaches where your router doesn't.
  • Running a cable or trenching power to the gate costs more than the module itself.
  • You want the gate to keep working when your home internet is down.
  • The people who need access don't live with you — tenants, guests, staff, contractors. Any phone can open the gate. No app to install, no invite to accept.

A Wi-Fi module is probably the better buy when

  • Your gate sits close enough to the house for a solid, reliable Wi-Fi signal.
  • You want live status, a camera, geofencing, or integration with Home Assistant, Alexa, or Google Home.
  • You'd rather not pay for a second SIM card and keep its credit topped up.
  • You want room to grow. A GSM module gives you a relay and an SMS reply — that's the ceiling. Internet-connected hardware does more.

Which hardware modules are supported?

GateOpener currently supports:

Does it work without internet?
Yes. GateOpener communicates with your gate module via SMS and phone calls over the cellular network. No internet connection or Wi-Fi is required.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All data stays on your device. GateOpener has no accounts, no cloud sync, and no analytics. Your gate configurations, phone numbers, and activity logs never leave your phone.
Can I use it with multiple gates?
Yes. Add as many gates as you need — home, work, rental property, parking garage. Each gate has its own settings, user list, and activity log.
Why does it need SMS and phone permissions?
GateOpener controls your gate module by sending SMS commands and making phone calls. These are the same methods you'd use manually — the app just provides a clean interface for them.
Is there an iOS version?
Not yet. GateOpener is currently Android-only. An iOS version is planned.
What if my module isn't supported?
Submit a hardware request with your module details and we'll work on adding support. Most modules can be added within a few weeks if you can provide the SMS command documentation.
Should I use a GSM gate opener or a Wi-Fi one?
It depends on distance. A GSM module works anywhere with cell signal, so it's the answer when your gate is too far from the house for reliable Wi-Fi — the end of a driveway, a field entrance, a shared parking barrier. If your gate does sit inside solid Wi-Fi range, an internet-connected module is usually the better buy: live status, camera options, and smart-home integration that GSM hardware can't do. GateOpener only makes sense once you have GSM hardware — it gives you a clean interface for the SMS commands, not features your module doesn't have.
